4 Landscaping Trends for 2022

Summer’s here and it’s time to enjoy the outdoors. If you’re looking for new ways to enjoy your ‘near’ outdoors, check out these landscaping trends.

1. It’s the Year of the Garden!

If you needed any more reasons to get your hands dirty, the Canadian Garden Council has declared 2022 as Canada’s ‘Year of the Garden’. The designation is to mark the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association. It couldn’t have come at a better time either. Recent lockdowns and restrictions on travel have kept us closer to home than ever.

According to the Landscape Ontario website, “The Year of the Garden 2022 invites Canadians across the country to commemorate Canada’s garden heritage, celebrate today’s vibrant garden culture and create legacies for a sustainable future.”

Interestingly, almost all of the landscaping trends we researched on the web fit the bill perfectly – especially relating to a more sustainable future.

2. Landscaping for the Birds

Sale of bird feeders and bird seed have spiked in the past two years, but feeding birds in just the start. Want to plant some new varieties in your yard? Consider shrubs and trees that bear fruit and evergreen trees that offer year-round shelter for nests.

3. Grow Your Own

Vegetables that is. Vegetable gardens have also increased in popularity over the last two years. While not as attractive as flowering and ornamental plants, vegetables can be mixed into flower gardens and in attractively designed beds or planters of their own.

4. Native Plants

If you’ve never had a green thumb, it could be just your choice of plants. Native species are more resilient to our unpredictable weather and wide ranging temperatures. In addition o making them easier to maintain, that also makes them more beneficial – and attractive – to bees, butterflies and birds.
