Are you aware of the things to check when renting a house? Well, the list is long. Just like checking a home before buying it, you want to make sure the conditions of your rental unit are worth the rent payments. And, you don’t want to sign a lease where there is damage to the rental property.
Here are 5 things to check when renting a house.
Check The Floors, Walls & Carpets
One of the first things you notice when walking into a home are the floors and walls. Check to see if you notice any chips or damage to the walls or wooden floors. If the home is carpeted, check for stains. You can also request for the home to be professionally cleaned before moving in so you do not have to deal with the stains.
Windows, Lights & Light Switches
Typically, you tour a rental unit during the day. This may mean you forget to turn on light switches to see if they work. Remember to switch them on throughout the tour and if any don’t work, inform the person giving the tour. You should also check the windows to ensure they lock properly and don’t have any cracks.
Confirm the HVAC and Thermostat works
If you notice that the rental unit is cooler or warmer than usual, check the thermostat and HVAC units. Both should be operating properly as you need adequate air conditioning and heating to be comfortable.
Ensure Safety Equipment Works
Make sure the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working. If you notice they are not lit up, then make sure you request to have them looked at before moving in.
Check Appliances
You don’t want to move into a home and find out the fridge or stove doesn’t work. Make sure you open up all the appliances and confirm they turn on and work. You can also check the bathrooms to ensure toilets and faucets work.
